Many thanks, will give them shout when i get their, you said its hard at the min, I thought it was getting a bit better over the past few months? What you think it is are the number of visitors down or they just not spending... Regards Dave

Both. Many ex pats have packed up and gone back to the UK, the building sector is one of the hardest hit as business has boomed over the last 10 years, so much so that the market has been flooded and there are many apartments/villas which have been built and not sold. They are just standing empty. If you are looking buy a place on the island, and you have cash, now is definitely the time to buy as you can pick up real bargains. People are struggling to pay mortgages as jobs have been lost and the banks are not keen to loan money, so it is a no win situation. Added to this, the number of tourists has fallen dramatically plus major road works in Puerto Del Carmen have put people off returning to the island. Many, many factors are involved, but having said that, I wouldnt go back to England to live, not for a million pounds....well I might think about it for a million, but no, Lanzarote is a beautiful island, the weather is normally good (!!!) Way of life is tranquil, very little major crime, never far from the sea, it still has a lot to offer and once the tourists start coming back, as they will, the island will be buzzing again. Good luck in your venture.

Hi AVFC, many thanks for you honesty. I have come to the same conclusion in regards to living in the UK and am just looking to get out of it all together. I have lived and worked abroad before so I lost my rose coloured glasses a long time ago I have a few ideas for a business that I think will work but I am in no hurry to rush into it until I can see if Lanzarote is the right place base it. I don’t mind working for someone in the mean time doing basically any thing to pay the bills, in the interim I would be looking to rent for a wile considering the cheep rental prices of some of the apartments until I see if Lanz is the place for me. I know you say that jobs have been lost, but is their any work available would Puerto Del Carmen be a lot quieter than the other resorts on the island now or is it still the one of busiest, would there be any work available or is it very quiet on all work fronts. Any more information or suggestions would be welcome. Regards

P Del Carmen is nowhere near as busy as it was, However, some established places seem to be ticking over. Jobs are few, but if you are willing to do anything, you have to go out and get your name around. If you have a trade or speak Spanish it will be a great help. I do think the "crisis" has seen the worst, but it will take time for recovery. Once confidence is restored and people start to buy properties again, things should start moving. If you have a little cash behind you to start off with, it will help a lot too, as money seems to disapppear very quickly out here and wages can be very very low.
