Hi,

Shore fishing near Pto. del Carmen?, Try the far end of Puerto Calero or between Carmen and Puerto Calero there's a small beach(no Sand)/ swimming area called "El Barranco".

For Boat fishing try: http://www.lanzarote.com/marine-excursions/

Hi,

On the coasts I suggested I’ve never fished anything to big, mind you I’m only a beginner and maybe not using the right bate or something? You’ll find there are Fulas, Sargo, Boga all in their early stage (small), but if you’re really interested in fishing something you can later cook and eat I suggest you go down south of the island... El Golfo area it’s the best place to go fishing mind you this place is a natural reserve close to Timanfaya and fishing is not allowed although it doesn’t seem to stop the local fishermen from going... be careful tides are tricky and it is a dangerous place to fish when the sea isn’t calm! You’ll find the same species but big enough to eat, also there are Viejas( this is served fresh in any local restaurant).

Look on here for the location!: http://www.lanzarote.com/maps/

thank you again, jenica! it's realy fun to get these smal fish. they are rather strong for their size. but i would like to get some fish big enough to eat too. i have been at el golfo area, but i do not want to fish there without a local experienced fisherman. it looks quite dangerous especially when there are some of these bigger waves. do you catch any herrera at your place? are you fishing only some meters away from land or do you use a long casting rod? what bite do you use, squid, any kind of shrimps or something like that or something else? did you ever get a flatfish like tapaculo or so? you see, i realy want to know a lot of things and i hope that it is okay for you! so if you have some time and will, you are realy wellcome to answer me. but i understand, if i gets to much. have a nice time! chippog from gothenburg, sweden

Hi chippog,

Its great to see that someone other than me enjoy's fishing on the island!

El golfo's fine to fish but you need a long casting rod so that you don’t have to put your self in danger by getting to close to the water...there are many high areas were there’s no risk of getting wet! But not good if your afraid of heights, also when you go fishing I suggest you never go alone because any thing could happen and if you haven’t got someone to go with you make sure someone knows where you are and what time you’ll be back, In regard to fishing Herrera’s I haven’t quite ever caught one yet and no flat fish en el golfo yet I’m not sure if there are any? Remember el golfo is a rock bottom area. Once I was fishing next to an old (local) obviously experienced fisherman and he showed me how to prepare an “engoo” have you tried using this method it works! You catch all kind of fish and even the octopus seems to be attracted to it, in regard to the bate I normally use squid and shrimps, normally has to be a bit rotten, something to do with the sent! (smelly). Although this fisherman also fished with live crabs that he would catch of the rocks while he was there, also helps to clean fish wile your there and throw remains back into the water!

if you are a beginner, you know quite a lot! and you seem very interested, which makes it a great pleasure to have this written conversation with you! sorry, i realy don't know what "engoo" is. but it sounds very interesting! so if you have the time, could you please explain it to me? i agree totaly, there would not be any flatfish at the el golfo area. but there could be some nereby puerto del carmen where there is sand. i might give it a try by night. as you write too, it is not to recomend to go to el golfo area alone. that is the reason why i won't go there. i don't no any local fisherman to join. and it would be nice to have some safety clothing lika floating overall or so. is there any god market for fresh fish, squid and shrimps in puerto del carmen, where i can bye some bite? is there any shop for fishing equipment too? at my first and only visit at lanzarote i stayed in playa del blanca and got some herrera and some other smaler fish. the four herreras i got were big enought to get them grilled at a restaurant. that was fun! i took with me to sweden all the smaler fish i caught. the were very tasty too! soon i have to put together my fishing equipment for the tripp. i realy look forward to the week in puerto del carmen!

Hi...

"Engoo" is a special preparation of bate...left over fish parts, shrimp heads and tales, hard bread etc (anything that’s not fit to eat) you mix it all with a special black liquid which you can buy in a specialized shop (anywhere you’ll find fishing equipment) it’s like a concentrated fish oil that smells really bad! And make up like a paste…stick it all in a plastic bottle and make a couple of small holes around the bottle tie it to a string and about 10min before you start fishing through it in to the water and tie the other end of the string to something close bye...the sea water will enter the bottle and loosen the paste which will leak out and attract all the fish to the coast so by the time you start fishing there will be a lot of hungry fish waiting for you to through them some bate! I’ve tried this in el golfo where the water is clear and its amazing to watch all the fish wondering around the bottle!.. Once I pulled the bottle out of the water and there was an octopus holding tightly to the bottle(it must have been on the rocks somewhere below me).

As fore where to buy bate I normally go to a place in Playa Honda called “Ropers” all frozen foods, and in with the shrimps there are some that are classified “not for human consume” I also by squid there in packets(small). If your looking for fresh it is more expensive but you’ll find a small “pesacaderia” on your way down to the “Old Town” Puerto del Carmen! Easy to find just after taxi rank on right had side!

Sorry chip for not getting back to you sooner but you may of noticed I was on Holiday!,

Night fishing in Pto. del Carmen? hard to answer I'm afraid, only been once, I stayed close to the street lights so that it would be easier to see... and my torch wasn’t brilliant either...to be honest I didn’t fish anything! As boat fishing: do you know how to speak Spanish? Try going down to the old harbor and very early in the morning and you’ll find to see a lot of small boats with local fisherman on their way to fish, ask them if you can join them and they will surely accept!

Ps: when are you next over in lanza?

i realy hope you had som fine days off! i'm coming with my family on the second of january. so if you give me an answer, i might read it in puerto del carmen. we stay one week only. my spanish is very poor. so i will have hugh problems to ask these fisherman if they can't speak english, german, swedish, norwegian or poor italian. it would realy be very nice to be on such a boattrip, but with my very poor spanish i don't beleave in it very much, without help from a spanish talking person. by the way "one", you might have the time to join the fisherman an me? by the way "two", how is it, fishing in the old harbour. is it allowed? is there some light in the night? i realy will give it a try, fishing by night, because i hope the flatfish will come near to the coast. and where there are fishing boats there will be some fish eating what falls down from these boats. i hope it will be the same in puerto del carmen as it is in the harbours i've fished. otherwise i will fish on another place with strong light where it's allowed. Light attracts fish as well. and in any case i will take with me a head lamp, which makes fishing by night a bit easier. so, end of a lot of questions from me. i hope it's ok for you. thank you a lot. i'm very curious to know how it works this time! have a very nice 2009! c
