You just can't go to Lanzarote without knowing about Cesar Manrique, he was responsible for all the major tourist attractions. Nice photos Jackie.

He was a great and talented man. We have just returned from Lanzarote, and were aware of a deep sense of peace when visiting each of the Manrique sites.
Disturbingly, we heard from two sources whilst there that there was a rumour at the time of his death that "all was not as it seems". The suggestion was that he had made enemies because of his lifestyle choices, and, in particular, because of his great influence over planning and development on the Island.
Can anyone add anything?

Manrique was the main Man. I love his art, his way of life and his influence on the island. Call me a sad git but I have one of his designs tattood on my arm. He sadly died before his time was up. With all the talk these days of green issues, I would have loved to heared Cesare talk to the UN about the environment.

I have just returned to England from the island and it breaks my heart to step off the plane at Birmingham. I will be back again in a few weeks. Back to a place that feels like home.

Graham,

As far as I can gather his death was a tragic car accident. There were no 'dark forces' after him. Yes there was some corruption on the island in terms of planning contracts etc, and various towns are still to this day paying the price. But look at the island, it remains a testament to Cesare's work.

He lived a full life, but drove his car too fast on bad roads.

Nope! I don't like it!

:agry At the risk of being "handbagged" by one and all, I just don.t get it!
The whole theme has a mimimalistic/ feng shui theme about it, and I don.t like it!!
Still, hats of to the man, for what he has done for the island in preserving its character and appearance, ( well mostly)

Talking Manrique

Billy Jo,

Go with Oleoetc tip. A word of warning - at Manrique's foundation, and in his gallery you will find some beautifull paintings where he has used the local volcanic dust to create a 3D landscape. The temptation is to touch it, which is something I am sure he would want - his art is very tactile.

My wife could not resist the temptation and we were duly thrown out by a very officious guard. I laughed like a drain, but my poor wife was terribly embarassed.

Another place, amoung many, worth visiting is Cuevos de las verdes. (The Caves of Green). It'll be on the Lanzarote.com site or any other. It is a cave system created by lava flows and there is an amazing secret in them which I cannot divulge. Visit and find out - you will be stunned.

Also, I can recommend driving up to Orzola and taking a ferry over to La Graciosa for lunch. The trip is just fantastic. Or Down to PB and across to Fuerteventua.

Take the organised tour of Timanfaya National Park - amazing.

If you like beaches, then Papagayos is to die for.

Enjoy - the island is my second home, and one day not too far away, will be my first home.

My place is in Costa Teguise - www.lanzarote-apartment.eu

Hi Guy's

I'v just joined this forum today and would like make a recommendation to check it out for yourself.
In my opinion, anyone who visit's Lanzarote and choses not to visit Cesar Manriques home and other tourist attractions that are influenced by him, are missing out on a big part of the real Lanzarote.

Whenever i have friends that visit me here i take them to all, or as many of the places as possible.

I personally get inspiration from each visit as i DO like his style but i can understand that not everyone agrees.

As a resident we get free or reduced entry, on boxing day i took 2 friends on the C M trip and they commented that 8 euros was "cheap" compared to the UK prices of entry to places of interest. :lanz :lanz

I agree, 8 euros, is 8 euros, but my friends tell me the UK prices for a visit to a similar type of attraction, eg Historic Scotland etc,
are 12 - 15 pounds !!
