Soccer,

There are recent reports of some Hotels having their Building licences annulled but this is the first I've heard of any actual closures.

Can you confirm that the story in Ireland is that 6 hotels have actually been CLOSED.

I heard it on the news this morning "What it says in the Papers" that they are to close and anyone planning to travel to Lanzarote check. I took special notice as i have been to Lanzarote on 5 occasions last year and once so far this year for a week each time.

I saw the column in The Sun too. Whether they go ahead with any threats or not, this kind of news story can do massive damage to the Lanzarote economy, as people looking to holiday here will think twice. Considering the downturn in tourist numbers of late, the Government are not doing the country any favours by making these threats, idle or not.

We had all this a few years ago didn't we? :rolleyes

It'll be a lot of baloney, I bet. Although, personally I think they should close 'em and pull 'em down, they are an :evil eyesore.

But, then again, if they did pull 'em all down, the mess that would cause would be another :evil eyesore

A "can't win situation". :sad The natural beauty lost can never be restored. :cry

Quote from the Sun article "BRITS hoping to holiday in Lanzarote may find themselves sunbathing amid RUBBLE "

(and it's not just the Sun, it's more supposedly 'respectable' papers as well)

There is an issue which is newsworthy and may harm the Lanza Toiurist Industry but its fair to report it nevertheless. However this sensationalism stuff is pathetic. People may genuinely think they will turn up at a bulldozed hotel !

I personally think that the hotels in question have been built quite tastefully. At least they're not high rise monsters.

You can't stop progress - just do it nicely.

If they pull them down it'd be a disaster.

I remember the big rush to get foundations laid before a certain date. This resulted in a "big hole" being dug by the Galeon Playa in C.T. Is the hole still there or is this now a hotel that is under threat? :khu

Are you talking about Papagayo Arena? Tasteful? That is a matter of opinion obviously, but personally I think it is hideous - an ugly blot on what was a majestic landscape.:cry And the only reason it isn't a high rise is because it is built into the cliff face.

I don't think it would be a disaster if they pulled IT down, :st I agree it would leave a very ugly mountain of rubble but lessons need to be taught and learnt if you ask me. Nothing would give me greater delight than reading that the awful place had been damned. But that is me being an unrealistic idealist, I know that. :(

And we all know there is NO way they will do that, corruption, greed and self interested politicians will ensure its continued survival. But, hopefully all the furore will ensure that there are no more monstrosties built.

And progress doesn't have to mean ugliness, does it? Why can't we have small "boutique" hotels built or better still, conversions of exisitng old buildings into chic one offs? I don't think people want to stay in these huge developments any more. They prefer a bit of style and class.

Less is more and small is beautiful.
