As far as I can gather his death was a tragic car accident. There were no 'dark forces' after him. Yes there was some corruption on the island in terms of planning contracts etc, and various towns are still to this day paying the price. But look at the island, it remains a testament to Cesare's work.
He lived a full life, but drove his car too fast on bad roads.
